The fact that roulette has it roots in France means that many of the terms are in French. We take a look at the terminology you will find when reading about roulette or playing at the casino. Some of the terms ralating to betting options are not available in all casinos.

A table with two zero positions (0 and 00)
- Ball
The small white ball that is spun on the roulette wheel
- Ball Track
The outer rim of the roulette wheel where the ball is spun
- Biased Wheel
A wheel that has a fault resulting in skewed outcomes
- Boule
A simplified roulette variations found in French casinos
- Carré
French for corner bet
- Cheval
French for split bet
- Column Bet
An outside bet that covers 12 numbers or one column
- Corner Bet
A bet placed in the middle of four numbers covering all four
- Croupier
The casino employee who runs the roulette table
- Derniere
French for the dozen bet on the last 12 numbers (25 to 36)
- Double Zero
A table that has two zero pockets 0 and 00 (Also see American Roulette)
- Dozen Bet
An outside bet that covers 12 numbers (1 to 12, 13 to 24, 25 to 36)
- En Plein
French for the straight up bet (A bet on one number)
- En Prison
An even money bet rule for French roulette where if a zero comes up a player can take half the bet back or leave it for another spin.
- European Roulette
A table that has only one zero and 36 other numbers
- Even Bet
A bet on all of the even numbers on the table
- Even Money Bets
Bets that pay 1 to 1. This include Red / Black, Odd / Even and
High / Low
- Finales a Cheval
A bet on all numbers ending with the two selected digits. For example 3/6 bets on
3, 6, 13, 16, 23, 26, 33, 36.
- Finales en Plein
A bet on all numbers ending with a particular number
- Five Number Bet
On american roulette tables this bet covers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3
- French Roulette
A table that has only one zero. Also known as European roulette
- High / Low Bet
An outside bet on either High (19 to 36) or Low (1 to 18)
- Impair
French for the Odd bet
- Inside Bet
Any bet on the inside area of the table where the numbers are
- La Partage
A similar rule to en Prison with the exception that the play loses half the even money bet but cannot leave the other half for the next spin.
- Line Bet
A bet on a line of numbers which covers 6 numbers
- Manque
The French term for the Low bet
- Noir
French for the Black bet
- Odd Bet
A bet on all of the odd numbers on the wheel (Does not include 0)
- Orphelins
Relates to French roulette and is a bet on the numbers not covered by the Voisins du Zero or the Tiers du Cylindre
- Outside Bet
A bet anywhere on the outside of the numbered area on the table
- Pair
French for the Even bet
- Passé
French for the High bet (19 to 36)
- Premiere 12
French for a bet on the first dozen (1 to 12)
- Rouge
French term for the Red bet
- Sixainne
French term for the line bet which covers six numbers
- Split Bet
An inside bet that covers two numbers
- Straight Up Bet
A bet that is placed on one number
- Street Bet
An outside bet that covers a row of three numbers
- Tiers du Cylindre
French for third of the wheel. A bet that covers
5, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 23, 24, 26, 27, 30 and 33.
- Transversale
The French term for the Street bet
- Voisins du Zero
French for Neighbors of Zero. A bet that covers
0, 2, 3, 4, 7, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29, 32, and 35 which surround the 0.
- Wheel
The spinning wheel with numbered slots used for roulette games.
