Online Casino Software Types

Today there are lots of online casinos in operation but only a handful of software types. This means that many online casinos use the same software as their competitors. The major players are Microgaming, Playtech, Wagerworks, Vegas Technology, Cryptologic and RTG.

At first you might chink that it is a negative that so many casinos use the same software but it is actually a plus in our opinion. This is due to several factors. The first is that you can play the same games at different casinos and in turn get a bonus or bonuses when you join the different casinos. The second plus is the linked jackpots grow much faster as the all of the casinos that use the same software share the same prize pool.

When it comes to playing you generally have two choices. You can download a free casino software program or play instantly via your browser. No download casinos have the advantage that you can play instantly while download versions tend to have more games and features. It is a personal choice but in our opinion you are almost always better going with a download if it's available.

Now let's take a look at the major players in the online casino industry.

Microgaming

One of the first companies to release online casino software, Microgaming launched in 1994 and are now the biggest of the casino software brands. They power over 100 online casinos and have released almost 400 games. The casinos must also pass strict tests which means all casinos that use Microgaming software operate fairly and have a good reputation among players.

WagerWorks

A division of IGT, WagerWorks is the only online casino software provider owned by a real land-based games manufacturer. This gives them a great game library of popular slots like Wheel of Fortune and Monopoly. Unfortunately for most players WagerWorks casinos are off limits due to the fact that players from the United States are banned from playing their games even for free.

Vegas Technology

Opposite to WagerWorks, Vegas Technology casinos are one of the few brands that still welcome all players from the USA. The only players they do not allow are Canadians. Formerly known as Odds On Gaming, the English Harbour Group is the biggest Vegas Technology operator with six online casinos.

Playtech

Listed on the London Stock Exchange, Playtech are one of the biggest publicly listed online gambling companies. Their game range was limit to about 60 games up until 2008 when they started expanding their offering. They are the only software company to offer Blackjack Switch online.

Cryptologic

Like Playtech, Cryptologic are a publicly listed company. They are one of the original casino software providers having been formed in 1995. Cryptologic casinos are known from their great game range including the very popular Marvel Slots and their big jackpot games Millionaires Club and Rags to Riches.

RTG (Realtime Gaming)

RTG casinos have a somewhat negative reputation due to the fact the it is easy to get a license from them. This has led to some rogue operators using the software. The actual games at RTG casinos are quite good especially their Real Series Slots and video poker games. If you are going to play at RTG casinos you should always do some research before you start playing.
