Probabilities for Craps

Every crap game is played with two six sided dice. From this we can determine that there are 21 unique combinations and 36 different ways to get all of the combinations. the most commonly rolled number is seven because there are six different ways this can be rolled.

It is worth remembering that the odds never change. Some players fall into the trap of thinking that because an outcome has not been rolled in a while it must be due to come. Each roll has exactly the same probability as the dice do not remember how they landed the last time.

Below is a list of the probabilities and number of ways for each outcome.

  • Total 2 : 2.78% (1 Way)
  • Total 3 : 5.56% (2 Ways)
  • Total 4 : 8.33% (3 Ways)
  • Total 5 : 11.11% (4 Ways)
  • Total 6 : 13.89% (5 Ways)
  • Total 7 : 16.67% (6 Ways)
  • Total 8 : 13.89% (5 Ways)
  • Total 9 : 11.11% (4 Ways)
  • Total 10 : 8.33% (3 Ways)
  • Total 11 : 5.56% (2 Ways)
  • Total 12 : 2.78% (1 Way)

The probabilities should give you a good idea why some of the bets on the craps table should be avoided such as the proposition bets. It also shines some light on why the pass line bet is the most popular seeing as to win a pass line bet you need to roll a seven or eleven.

This means that on average a 7 will be rolled every six rolls. Of course this does not happen exactly this way. You could get several sevens in a row or no sevens for a series of rolls. Over the long term however the probabilities will even out to the correct figures. Individual games will give you a wide variety of results.

The odds of each outcome occurring are as follows

  • Total 2 : 1 in 36
  • Total 3 : 1 in 18
  • Total 4 : 1 in 12
  • Total 5 : 1 in 9
  • Total 6 : 1 in 7
  • Total 7 : 1 in 6
  • Total 8 : 1 in 7
  • Total 9 : 1 in 9
  • Total 10 : 1 in 12
  • Total 11 : 1 in 18
  • Total 12 : 1 in 36
